1. Spinach: Popeye not only become really strong eating spinach but he also protected himself against osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, arthritis (anti-inflammatory), improved learning and motor skills and other diseases all at the same time.
2. Walnuts: If you hate fish, try a handful of walnuts to supplement your body with the all powerful omega-3 essential fatty acids. Essential because our body cannot produce them. Omega-3s benefit the cardiovascular system, making blood less likely to clot inside arteries which improves the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to potentially harmful (LDL) cholesterol. It also reduces inflammation, which is a key component to living a healthy functional playful life. The health benefits are endless and they are both affordable and delicious… Go get you some!
3. Broccoli: These little trees are among the most powerful weapons in our dietary arsenal against cancer. Broccoli is one of the most nutrient-dense foods known; it offers incredibly high level’s of nutrition for a very low caloric cost. Make Broccoli a part of your life, thank me later.
4. Avocado: It’s high fat content (monounsaturated) and rich supply of nearly 20 essential nutrients makes for a tasty snack or spread. From Cardiovascular Health to Improved Immune Functions to Healthy Skin… need I say more! Substitute for butter and other saturated fat based spreads.
5. Sardines: I know there a little funky and smell to high heaven but you should really consider supplementing Sardines into your diet. There high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Vitamin D, Calcium, B12, Protein and Low in Mercury. There bottom of the food chain which means they have less contaminants than Salmon and other larger fish species. That’s the reason why I listed Sardines instead of Salmon, however please eat both.
6. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Instead of salad dressing use Olive Oil. The health benefits are endless. Eat 2 tbsp. daily.
7. Collard Greens: The nutritional superstar. From cleansing and detoxifying your body, improving and strengthening your immune system (which reduces the development and progression of virtually all degenerative diseases), protects against cancer, heart disease… it’s a superstar; it does it all!
8. Berries: Antioxidants! It keeps your immune system strong. Strong immune system = enjoyable, functional life. Enjoy!
9. Almonds: One teeny ounce of almonds contains 12 percent of your daily allowance of protein, and absolutely no cholesterol. You’ll also get 35 percent of your daily allowance of vitamin E (that valuable antioxidant with so many cancer-fighting qualities). And most of the fat is monounsaturated, known as the “good” fat. This little nut is also loaded with minerals like magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, calcium and folic acid as well as lots of healthy fiber (helps the digestive tract run smoothly).
